Instructors for Our Childbirth Classes
Summerlin Hospital offers multiple childbirth classes for expecting and new parents. Our class instructors are excited to meet you and help you prepare for having a baby or help you take care of your loved one after birth.

Christie Calara BSN, RN
Christie began her nursing career at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Christie started on a high acuity, stroke/cardiac telemetry unit before transferring to Summerlin Hospital’s Postpartum Unit in 2022.
Christie is passionate about providing education and evidence-based care for her patients and their families. Christie is also a trusted preceptor and resource for new nurses and students training on the floor. Christie aims to build the confidence of new parents and new nurses through education.
Christie teaches Postpartum Afterglow and Baby Care Boot Camp.
Candice Halverson BSN, RN, CLC
Candice Halverson graduated from Nevada State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2016. She trained as a new-graduate labor and delivery RN at The Summerlin Birthplace and received her Lactation Certification in 2022.
She is an advocate for evidence-based obstetric care and supporting the hormonal physiology of childbirth. Candice is originally from Jackson WY, is married and has two children.
Candice teaches Childbirth Basics and Natural Birth Class.
Zoie Koch OTR/L, OTD, CLC, CIMI
Zoie earned her B.S. in Health Sciences from Whitworth University in 2019, then completed her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at Northern Arizona University in 2022. Since then, she has worked in pediatric acute care at Summerlin Hospital, including the hematology/oncology unit, PICU, NICU, postpartum and antepartum units.
She has advanced knowledge in infant feeding/development through continuing education and earned additional certifications in Infant Massage Instruction (CIMI) and Lactation Counseling (CLC) to better support infants and their caregivers in the early stages of life. She was born and raised in Henderson and enjoys supporting families in the community through the Childbirth Education program.
Zoie teaches the Infant Massage class.
Monique Lyman BSN, RN
Monique is a postpartum clinical supervisor with over 14 years of nursing experience.
In her leadership role, she oversees daily operations of the Birthplace’s mother-baby unit, trains and mentors new nurses and ensures the highest standards of patient care. She is dedicated to equipping new families with the knowledge they need for the early stages of parenthood and beyond. Monique is married and has five children.
Monique teaches Baby Care Boot Camp.
Genisha Salcedo APRN, FNP-C, IBCLC
Genisha is a dedicated postpartum nurse and clinical supervisor on The Summerlin Birthplace’s Postpartum Unit. She brings over a decade of expertise in breastfeeding education and support to expectant and new families as an International Board-Certified Lactation Counselor.
Genisha’s commitment to lifelong learning and professional development is demonstrated by her most recent accomplishment, earning her APRN-FNP-C credentials in 2025. Genisha is married, has one daughter and enjoys traveling around the world.
Genisha teaches Introduction to Breastfeeding, Postpartum Afterglow and Baby Care Boot Camp.
Ginny Serviss BSN, RN
Ginny Serviss began her work in maternal care as birth doula in 2021 with a passion for supporting mothers and families throughout their childbirth journey. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2023 and worked as a postpartum RN before transferring to labor and delivery.
She is an advocate for natural physiological birth and desires to provide evidence-based care that empowers, informs, and encourages patients. She is currently pursuing a degree to become a Certified Nurse Midwife at UNLV.
Ginny teaches Childbirth Basics and Natural Birth Class.
Jennfier Shaw BSN, RN, CLC
Jennifer Shaw has been a postpartum nurse since 2013, providing compassionate care to new mothers and their babies. She earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from CSN in 2011 and later completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2024. In 2022, she became a Certified Lactation Counselor, further supporting families in their breastfeeding journeys.
Jennifer is married and has two children and two dogs.
Jennifer teaches Postpartum Afterglow and Introduction to Breastfeeding.
Brenda Swanson OTR, CLC, CIMI
Brenda has over 25 years of experience as an occupational therapist. Since 2007, Brenda has worked in the Summerlin NICU where she completes neonatal developmental assessments and care plan recommendations for anatomical, sensory and neurological systems.
Brenda is most passionate about supporting families in their independence with handling, nurturing and supporting the healthy development of their babies in a setting that feels very foreign, and many times unexpected. Brenda is also a certified lactation counselor and uses this knowledge to help NICU families achieve their desired breastfeeding goals.
Brenda teaches Infant Massage and Introduction to Breastfeeding.
