Overview of the Unit

The RehabCenter at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center is dedicated to assisting individuals with disabling conditions and to help them reach their maximum potential by providing acute rehabilitation services.

The RehabCenter is a 48-bed unit located on the sixth floor of the hospital. Our rooms are private. Our service area includes all of Las Vegas and counties in the surrounding areas of Arizona, California, Northern Nevada, and Southwest Utah.

The RehabCenter admits adult patients, typically eighteen and older, who can effectively participate in the program and benefit from the full range of diagnostic, evaluation, therapeutic, and treatment services offered. The focus of the Rehab Center is on the accomplishment of treatment goals and on abilities rather than disabilities.Comprehensive physical rehabilitation services are provided six to seven days per week.

Nursing rehabilitation is provided 24 hours a day, seven days per week for patients with the following diagnoses:

  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Brain injury
  • Total joint replacement
  • Polyarthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis
  • Amputation
  • Neurological disorders
  • Major multiple trauma
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Deconditioning secondary to other diagnoses

The RehabCenter uses a patient and family centered team approach to care. This approach emphasizes continuous interaction among the team members including weekly team meetings and frequent patient/family education and training. Job types in the RehabCenter include:

  • Medical Director and rehabilitation physicians
  • Rehabilitation nursing (RNs and CNAs)
  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Social workers
  • RN case managers
  • Nutritionists
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Animal facilitated therapy

Qualifications

All disciplines working in the Rehab Center are licensed in their clinical specialty.

Expectations

Nurses who are employed in the Rehab Center receive a full orientation to the specialty elements of rehabilitation nursing. After two years of experience in the Rehab Center, an RN is qualified to become certified in the specialty of rehabilitation nursing. Nurses are encouraged to attain their CRRN certification.

Nurses work 12-hour shifts three times per week. Nurses working in the RehabCenter can expect a working environment that is warm, open, supportive, and nurturing. Nurses who work in the RehabCenter witness wonderful outcomes in each patient due to the efforts of the team and the patient and family during the rehabilitation recovery time. This is a real job-satisfaction element experienced in the unit.
