Summerlin Hospital celebrated the completion of its Emergency Room (ER) and Pediatric ER expansion on December 6 with a pediatric community health fair and tours of the newly completed ER.

The new ER more than doubles the size of the hospital's previous ER and includes private patient care areas, integrated (in-ER) imaging suites, a new approach to managing chest pain patients and an all-new Pediatric ER, complete with a spaceship pattern in the floor and twinkling star lights in the ceiling!

"The ER expansion was uniquely designed to not only help expedite care, but to provide patients with a more comfortable and private environment to receive care,"says Robert Freymuller, CEO/Managing Director at Summerlin Hospital.

A new four-armed assistant is helping surgeons at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center perform minimally invasive procedures on some patients.

The da Vinci® Surgical System may not perform surgery on its own, but it does enable surgeons to recreate the movement of their hands, wrists and fingers within a very confined space in the patient's body.

During these procedures, surgeons make small incisions to accommodate the robot's arms, which are equipped with a high-resolution camera and special surgical instruments. Doctors then sit at a console near the patient where they view magnified, three-dimensional images of the surgical site. Using master controls, they direct the movements they want the robotic arms to make inside the patient's body.  The da Vinci robot has a full range of motion and offers an added level of precision by filtering out normal hand tremors.

"They allow surgeons to operate in real time and help to improve patient outcomes. Summerlin Hospital Medical Center has been selected by the National Research Corporation (NRC) as a 2008-09 Consumer Choice Award winner. The award identifies hospitals which healthcare consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in more than 250 markets throughout the U.S.

"This award is just one indicator of how Summerlin Hospital Medical Center is performing as a healthcare facility," says Karla Perez, Vice President and Group Director for The Valley Health System. "We recognize that consumers have choices when it comes to making healthcare decisions, and we are pleased that Las Vegas has chosen Summerlin Hospital for this recognition."

Ginny Martin, President of NRC's Healthcare Market Guide Division, said winners of this award are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company's Healthcare Market Guide Ticker study. "These Consumer Choice Award winners exemplify the dedication it takes to provide quality healthcare to their communities, and we are pleased to honor them through the eyes of their patients."

The NRC surveyed more than 200,000 households representing more than 400,000 respondents in order to determine which hospitals provide the highest quality of care in their metropolitan service areas. Their answers were then weighted and tabulated to form the list of top hospitals. The margin of error in the survey is + or - 0.2 percent.
