Summerlin Hospital Recognized as Consumer Choice Winner Second Year in a Row

Consumer Choice Winner

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center has once again been selected by the National Research Corporation (NRC) as a 2009/2010 Consumer Choice Award winner. The award identifies hospitals which healthcare consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in more than 300 markets throughout the U.S.

"We recognize that consumers have choices when it comes to making healthcare decisions, and we are pleased that Las Vegas has once again chosen Summerlin Hospital to receive this recognition," said Robert Freymuller, CEO/Managing Director at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center.

Ginny Martin, President of NRC's Healthcare Market Guide Division, said winners of this award are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company's Healthcare Market Guide Ticker study. Dedication to providing high quality healthcare has become essential for all hospitals. The Consumer Choice award winners exemplify the dedication it takes to provide quality healthcare to their communities."

Consumer Choice Award winners for 2009/2010 can be found in the October 12 issue of Modern Healthcare.

Patient Tower at Summerlin Hospital Nears Completion

New Summerlin Tower

Hanging the artwork, touching up the paint, and a few other finishing touches is all that is left to complete the long-awaited new patient tower at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center. The hospital broke ground on the new six-story patient tower nearly 16 months ago, and anticipates an opening date scheduled for the end of the year.

The new tower adds an additional 174-private patient rooms to the hospital bringing the total number of hospital rooms to 455. "We've continued to grow in order to meet the many needs of our service community," said Robert Freymuller, CEO/Managing Director. "This far-reaching expansion was planned very carefully to incorporate the specific types of medical services our community needs and rightly expects."

The patient tower is the third and final phase of the hospital's $100 million expansion-the largest expansion project in its 12-year history. The project includes more labor and delivery and recovery suites, antepartum and postpartum suites, an expanded Level III NICU and new beds in a number of key areas including critical care, medical/telemetry and post surgery.

Summerlin Hospital -- A Great Place to Work

Best Places to WorkSummerlin Hospital Medical Center has been voted one of the "Best Places to Work" in Las Vegas according to a 2009 InBusiness Las Vegas magazine survey.

Ranked first among all hospitals and coming in a close second among all businesses with more than 500 employees, Summerlin Hospital is a great place to work because it offers innovative benefits, such as flexible scheduling, as well as a culture of effort recognition according to Mason Hudson, Administrator of Human Resources.

"Summerlin Hospital provides compassionate care for both its patients and employees," said Hudson.

Among the benefits enjoyed by Summerlin Hospital employees are sign-on and retention bonuses, an extra day's pay for six months of perfect attendance, and self-scheduling opportunities.

The hospital also sponsors a Peak Performance Award that encourages employees, patients, or visitors to recognize dedicated employees for outstanding service and for inspiring others to do their best.

Nearly 150 companies and organizations were nominated to enter the "Best Places to Work" competition.

Robotic Surgery Now Offered at
Summerlin Hospital

da VinciA new four-armed assistant is helping surgeons at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center perform minimally invasive procedures on some patients.

The da Vinci® Surgical System may not perform surgery on its own, but it does enable surgeons to recreate the movement of their hands, wrists and fingers within a very confined space in the patient's body.

During these procedures, surgeons make small incisions to accommodate the robot's arms, which are equipped with a high-resolution camera and special surgical instruments. Doctors then sit at a console near the patient where they view magnified, three-dimensional images of the surgical site. Using master controls, they direct the movements they want the robotic arms to make inside the patient's body.  The da Vinci robot has a full range of motion and offers an added level of precision by filtering out normal hand tremors.

"Robotic systems are one of the most significant advances we've seen in medicine," said Robert Freymuller, CEO/Managing Director at Summerlin Hospital. "They allow surgeons to operate in real time and help to improve patient outcomes. Patient benefits typically include a shorter hospital stay, less pain, fewer complications after surgery and a quicker recovery."
